I'm looking into getting a dog, but my boyfriend is slightly allergic, we dont live together though. I'm really into either a Rottweiler or a Newfoundland... yeah... big difference in hair length, but does it make a difference?
For someone who is allergic.. does it make a difference whether a dog has short or long hair? I would think short hair would affect people with allergies more than long hair. Not becasue of the length of the hair, but becasue of the shedding amount. Short hair dogs constantly shed, year round, producing more dander. Long hair dogs normally shed once or twice a year, although they will still have dander year round
EDIT: every single dog sheds, even poodles, bichons, ect. They are just extremely light shedders.
And there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. Some dogs don't bother peoples allergies as bad, but it depend on person to person. EVERY dog has dander, some just have less, causing less of an allergic reaction. I work at a shelter and the second most common reason for animals being given to us is allergies. And most of the dogs given up for that reason are the bichons, lhasa apso, and poodles. Because someone with allergies was told that these dogs are hypoallergenic, then got the dog and had allergic reactions, because they listened to an uneducated person's advice that the dog was hypoallergenic

The amount of grooming the dog does regularly can make some difference, but overall it's pretty hit-or-miss whether someone with a mild allergy reacts to a particular dog.
However, you should be informed that allergy reaction can increase with time and exposure. This means that you might get a dog to which your bf doesn't seem to react, but in 6 weeks, or 6 months, his reaction to the dog might worsen. Sorry.

Make sure that you use a quality dog food and groom your dog regularly. I use Blue Buffalo and all four of our dogs shed very little now! We have a Black Lab/Retriever mix, a Beagle, a Boston Terrier and a Boston Terrier/Cattle dog mix. The Black Lab/Retriever mix used to shed the most until we switched to Blue Buffalo! Now all four dogs have minimal shedding, because they eat healthy dog food!

While some may be allergic to certain breeds,hair coats, etc. others may not.
I'm allergic to darn near everything. The shorter the hair (JRT, Pitties, Labs etc.), the larger the rash I get. And I come across hundreds of different breeds all the time.
I'm also asthmatic and longer -haired dogs seem to trigger this more...
I think it depends all on the person.

I know someone who is allergic to almost every dog she touches except german shepherds. I know someone with a husky and a husky/shepherd mix. The husky wreaks havok on his allergies but the mix doesn't bother him at all.
Best thing to do would be to find a responsible breeder, or a breed rescue, and ask to spend some time with the dogs and see how your boyfriend does around them.

The length does not make a difference, though there are some dogs that shed less than others (they are often called "shedless" or "hypo-allergenic" but I assure you there is no such thing). And if the allergy is slight, it shouldnt make much of a difference whether you go with a low shedding breed or not.

I'm allergic to dogs.. but have less issues with double coated dogs than with single coated ones.... and have fewer issues with dogs I'm exposed to on an ongoing basis than new dogs.
Also, I have fewer issues with dogs that have been recently bathed.
(Puppies, all puppies, sent me for a loop... I have to be sure to wash my hands frequently and remind myself not to bury my nose in their lil fuzzy bodies)

Have you ever heard of a labradoodle? It's a cross between a labrador and a poodle. They actually don't cause allergic reactions in people with allergies. The hospital I work at uses one of them for our therapy dogs, because even the sickest kids aren't allergic to "Dr. Wooly" But make sure you get a dog that you want and aren't going to regret in the future.

I have had asthma and allergies all my life and I also have two children with allergies and asthma. We have a mutt with long hair but she doesn't shed at all. She does not bother our allergies at all. I know the allergens stem from the dander and saliva, but she does not affect us at all.
I used to own Italian Greyhounds years ago. Their coat is very short, but they triggered my allergies. I did get used to their specific dander after a few months and they rarely affected me anymore. I think you can build up a tollerance for your own animals dander.

I would suggest the standard poodle because they are hypoallergenic, and they r the 2nd smartest dog in the world.

They are usually small breeds however. The toy poodle, yorkie, maltese, bichon frise; these are all dogs that wont give you allergies. But the best dog would probbaly the bichon frise they shed no hair what so ever. No allergies, Less hair mess.
