Also, my hair doesn't seem to want to hold the curls even with hair spray --- please help!

i think you might be holding the curling iron the wrong way.... make sure that the part that opens up is on the outside (not facing u) and then put ur hair in it and curl... if the 'opening' part of the curling iron is facing towards you then it is the wrong way... sorry it's kind of hard to explain.
